Description
Sutrya is a little bit of a thing – a bit below average in height, although her straight-backed posture and the tilt of her proudly-carried head could perhaps serve to create an illusion of a few extra inches if one doesn’t notice the heels she usually wears peeking out from under the hem of her skirts.
Midbrown hair is usually worn up in a twist or netted, but when down it falls in loose waves about slim shoulders. Fine-boned facial features, straight nose and slightly pointed chin, balanced by a wide forehead and the curve of her cheek create a heart-shaped face. Expressive brows, a shade or two darker than her hair are usually a giveaway to her true emotions though she might strive to hide behind a cool reserve and a detached manner. Thick-lashed eyes of near-black oft carry a spark of devilment that betrays her inner comic and dispels the somber expression therein. Her mouth, lower lip slightly full with a sweetness that hints at her ability to let it go in a wide, warm smile, is restrained to a subtly mocking quirk, or brief flickers that could be a touch mischievous. Most times, though it is kept firmly within bounds if she can manage it.
Unless otherwise occupied in some sort of outdoor activity, Sutra wears finely-sewn garments made with expensive materials. Though not overly-fancy and fussy, she’s dressed as one of the fosterlings of the Hold might be – in a skirt and blouse or a dress, footwear definitely designed for style rather than comfort.
Personality
Sutrya is a resilient, strong-minded young woman who knows what she doesn’t want. And that is to be married off to some holder and stuck managing his home for the rest of her life – at least not yet. Though she takes duty rather seriously, there are some things she wants to do first. Inside she questions many things that others take for granted, but rather than come right out with her questions, she waits to establish trust. Reserved on the surface, she warms up when she feels a kindred spirit – or at least an open-minded one. She is not shy or timid in the least, but rather reticent with her thoughts until she is sure she’s comfortable enough to let her guard down. Though unaware of it, Sutrya needs to learn to live in the moment more and find simple joys in the unknown, experience things that are beyond her control and scope of experience.
History
Born in High Reaches Hold, Sutrya is the eldest of 14 children born to Lord Dyregh and Lady Taghenne. Her childhood was a privileged one, with High Reaches Hold prospering during the Interval. Most of her time outside of Harper lessons, she spent with her sisters learning the various needle work crafts, taking dancing and runner riding lessons and grasping the social graces her mother tried to ingrain in them.
At 16 turns old, she presents her father with somewhat of a problem as he has been unable to find a suitable match for her (aka: profitable to him). It seems Sutrya has a mind of her own and hasn’t helped much in that regard, taking little interest in the parties and gathers designed to meet and greet young lords-to-be. Oh she’s gone to them. But attendance and encouragement are two entirely separate things. Most such evenings found her ensconced with the elder craftsmen and women attending from Starcraft, Smithcraft and Harper Halls discussing mathematical theory and star equations rather than flirting with the young hopefuls.
With her sire becoming more insistent, Sutrya, with the endorsement of her mother, has suggested a reasonable venture: To foster at one of the further distant holds. Lord Dyregh is all for cross-Hold diplomacy and believing that new experiences make for a more well-rounded sort of education, agreed: Sutrya is to foster at Igen Hold. That he was so nudged in Igen’s direction by Sutra herself was no mistake. She has her own unspoken reasons for wanting to be at the desert Hold.
Not but a few days in Igen, that hold’s plan of fostering some teenagers up at Igen Weyr for a turn as a demonstrative gesture to show other holds their excellent ties and confidence they have with the Weyr was put in motion. Sutrya was one of those placed in the group with her father’s apparently reluctant agreement and now finds herself at Igen Weyr instead of Igen Hold.
First time away from home - on her own as it were, Sutrya appears to have led a fairly sheltered life under rather strict supervision. It’s fairly obvious from the way she takes in the world around her that this place and culture it is new and rather fascinating to her.
Hooks
- Sutrya was fostered to Igen Hold, ostensibly to reinforce ties between High Reaches Hold and Igen Hold, learn domestic hold management from another viewpoint and expand her cultural horizons.
- Igen Hold’s Lady seems to feel her fosterlings will benefit from time spent over at the Weyr and thus some of them have been included with the group of young men and women sent over from her hold to stay for the turn.
- Marks aren’t in short supply for Sutrya, nothing she flaunts, but it’s no secret either.
- She has been overheard enquiring about a guided trip out into the desert, but presently the reason remains unstated.
